Reading Hospital is a resource-rich, 697-bed nonprofit community teaching hospital located in West Reading, PA. The beautiful, thriving suburban location offers easy access to Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, Washington DC, and New Jersey beaches.

Our broad-spectrum training fosters true comprehensiveness, preparing versatile graduates who are ready for any path they choose. Recent alumni have begun careers in outpatient family medicine, hospitalist care, rural practice, urgent care, and emergency medicine. Fellowship placements include palliative care, addiction medicine, obstetrics, obesity medicine, sports medicine, emergency medicine, and public health, to name a few.

  • Drexel University College of Medicine at Tower Health - West Reading's branch campus since 2021 provides many teaching and mentorship opportunities. Our program received the "Outstanding Department Award" from the inaugural West Reading DUCOM class and was the 2026 recipient of the "Inclusive Excellence Award." These awards are nominated and voted upon by third and fourth year medical students at Tower Health to honor their excellence as teachers and role models.

  • Clinical experience and robust patient volumes - The opportunities are truly limitless. Our emergency department is the busiest in Pennsylvania and consistently ranks among the top 10 busiest in the United States, offering unparalleled clinical exposure and experience.
  • Family medicine inpatient service - A true family medicine service, providing comprehensive, simultaneous care for adults, children, and newborns. Residents take full, hands-on ownership 24/7/365, with continuous support and guidance from experienced family medicine faculty.
  • Pediatrics - With no pediatrics residency at Reading Hospital, our residents function as the pediatrics residents for the pediatric hospitalist service, the Children's Health Center, and our hospital's newborn nursery.

  • Reading Hospital's Family Health Care Center (FHCC) is multidisciplinary, featuring an on-site, embedded PhD Psychologist, Clinical Pharmacist, and Social Worker.
  • With the innovative "Clinic First" scheduling model, our residents are better prepared for future practice, reducing fragmentation between training sessions.
  • Located on Reading Hospital's campus, travel is limited - maximizing convenience and efficiency.

  • Population health and community medicine - Opportunities to care for our high-risk, socially disadvantaged population including Berks Free Clinic, Street Medicine, Centro Hispano Community Center, and Primary Care Research.
  • Primary care procedures - Orthopedic, women's health, and dermatologic procedure training.

  • Addiction Medicine Fellowship affiliation - ACGME-accredited and managed by the world-renowned Caron Foundation.

Program Features and Opportunities

  • ACGME Osteopathic Recognition - Includes a structured OMM clinic several times per month, monthly OMM lectures, OMM Journal Club, Mock Board Practicals, and opportunities for Osteopathic Research. Our "OMT for MD" curriculum helps to integrate holistic care throughout the entire residency.
  • Wellness program - Includes weekly Chief Resident Meetings and Resident-Faculty Forums to facilitate communication of creative ideas to improve our program. Protected time for personal appointments. Listening matters!
  • Research opportunities - The Hanna Center for Primary Care Research provides research opportunities for residents, students, academic faculty, and community physicians.  
  • Leadership opportunities - In addition to chief resident roles, residents provide leadership of our quality improvement “Team Time” curriculum and to committees including the Program Evaluation Committee, Community Medicine and Outreach, Curriculum and Scholarly Activity, FHCC Problems and Solutions, Recruitment, and Party Planning/Wellness.
